The Best Way to Design a TTRPG

There are many types of TTRPGs. Some are categorized as "rules-light," which means they feature minimalist, versatile mechanics that are easy to grasp. On the other end of the spectrum, "rules-heavy" or "crunchy" games are often characterized by their detailed mechanics, extensive rules, and complex systems that govern gameplay.

To me, I don't care as much about these attributes as much as I care on whether a game is designed with mechanics that support its thematic ideas and setting. I refer to these as "rules-bright" TTRPGs.

I shared this concept on social medias, and the posts blew up. As a result, I've decided to create and release a free, minimalist asset pack for designers who want to label their games as "Rules Bright."

This Isn't Bullet Proof

Don't assume that just because a game has this label, it guarantees that the mechanics effectively support the game's themes.

Some may take those icons and shoehorn them into a so-called slice-of-life game that uses DnD-like mechanics, and there's nothing we can do about that. There is no golden hammer nor perfect solution.

The idea behind designing this logo was that if you want to use it, you should ask yourself the following question:

Have I designed something that's generic in nature, or have I designed a system that works in tandem or enhances the themes of my game?

If a designer asks themselves this question and it makes them think twice about the mechanics of their game, then my job is done. As such, this is more a tool for designers than it is a marketing brand of some sort.

Use Responsibly

No game is perfect, but if an effort was made, then we all win. Many designers don't know that this is even something they should think about.
